People think that those moving to a new country should accept the new culture in the foreign country. Others think that they should live as a separate minority group with a different lifestyle. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. People hold varying opinions as to how immigrants should keep up with their new environment. Whereas some argue that they had better continue their lives in a limited community merely including people from their own nationality, it seems to me assimilation into the new culture would be of greater benefit to them. It is often argued that it would be significantly easier for people to live with their own culture and be surrounded by like-minded peers. In many cases, having been raised and brought up with diametrically opposed views and culture, emigrants find is too arduous a process to start enjoying new values promoted in the new society. Consequently, it might deter them from living in the new place, where they can hardly relate to. Moreover, it is often considered paramount to preserve their homeland values and hand it down to the next generation, for their children would be more likely to feel confident if they understood and were aware of the rich heritage their family has come from. However, short of embracing a new culture, barely could a newly-moved individual pursue a successful and promising career. In today’s day and age, while both respecting and encouraging diversity of the workforce, many organizations expect a homogenous culture to enable employees to operate in the most efficient and smooth way and yield the best result. In addition, the future of their children might suffer unless they grew up with a profound understanding of the new culture and language. For example, if emigrant families’ children aimed to apply and study for a decent university, not only would they need to be equipped with advanced language proficiency, but also they should be capable of interacting and socializing with people as a colleague or classmate. In conclusion, although coping with a new culture might be both challenging and demanding for many people who have moved to a new country, I am holding on to the view that it would be more beneficial for them to adapt.
