More and more people are moving from rural areas to live in cities. What problems can this cause? How can these problems be solved? In search of a better life, thousands abandon their rural homes every day and move toward urban areas to perpetuate the trend which was set decades ago. Urbanization, a 20th-century phenomenon, whether regarded as a problem or not, indeed can have impacts and has made many try to resolve the issue. As the emergence of industrialization caused swarms of people to abandon their rural areas and move to cities, concerns started to mount over the potential problems. The first immediate problem is perhaps inherent. Overpopulation, the state of having too many people, can bring about stiff competition among city dwellers who have no choice but to find decent work in order to survive. Whether a native or a rural migrant, young or old, one is obliged to fight in this increasingly suffocating ‘Colosseum’ where there is no spectator. Triggered by the rapid growth of cities in size city life can be literately a chaos. Astronomical prices, senseless traffic jams, and thorny housing are only a few among many of which representing the insanity in these so-called popular metropolises, resulting in a large variety of mental if not physical problems. Resolutions, however, to this enigma have been introduced by many experts including city planners and developers although many have proved to be unfeasible. With a number of determining factors, the puzzle, resembling a combination lock, necessities necessitates a truly joint effort. Firstly, governments are responsible to a certain extent to decentralize institutions and amenities which mainly attract migrants. As long as all the national budget is funneled into big cities under the pretext that they contain more inhabitants, it is highly unlikely to stop the trend. Second, people also need to reconsider the value of life free from tension caused by city life. They need to question the validity of urban life, hence the cost they pay to undergo the madness. In conclusion, although urbanization as a universal trend is currently on the rise due to their popular attractions, living in big cities can often bring about problems such as the high price of living and severe completion competition for work, and these problems, optimistically, can be solved if governments and individuals make a collective effort.
