Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. The question of whether the universities curriculum must be predefined, including science and technology courses, or not has emerged as one of the most controversial issues facing the academic world these days. In this essay, I will explore both points of view before giving my own opinion of each. On the one hand, some people opine that each individual has various abilities. Therefore, each person must choose the path in which they are more talented. As a case in point, if we force a student, whose interest is art, to study math not only could he not be successful but also he would miss his opportunity to be a great artist. Furthermore, even if he succeed to finish his study in science and technology areas he still might not find appropriate job or be a pioneer at his future career. Hence many unemployed graduated students. On the other hand, another group claims that society needs many scientist and technician to lead the country in future. In this viewpoint, if we put courses selection on students, they might not be mature enough to choose the more important ones. In contrast, the easier the course is the more interested the students become in it, thereby missing the considerably more important programs. In other words, the country would face lack of some difficult expertise in next generation. Besides, statistics have shown that students are more responsible about compulsory treatments, which means they withdraw more elective courses while they are far more committed to their mandatory syllabus schedules. At last, the main conclusion to be drawn from this discussion is that neither mere fixed programs nor entirely elective ones could work efficiently for universities. Thus, were I to choose, I would definitely vote for a combination of mandatory and optional courses to meet both society and individual needs.
