Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university? The educational institutes came to existence for the purpose of providing solutions to meeting humans’ daily needs. It is then evident that a direct connection between universities and citizens’ demands—which are what jobs are meant for—, has always existed. Conversely, some might harbor other contrasting thoughts reasoning that universities are also in charge of conveying conceptual subjects that do not necessarily provide practicality with them. I, however, believe that both proposed views, in conjunction with each other, would better define the precise nature of universities. To have a fully functional workforce, people need to be educated in their field of expertise. This is only achieved if we have a dedicated place for providing all the necessary knowledge for people’s prospective jobs, and universities, naturally, fit perfectly well with the above proposition. Moreover, at this day and age, business owners expect an array of both technical and soft skills from the employees. For that reason, it is sensible for graduates to, for instance, comprehend all the necessary know-how for an accountancy position. If graduates are not capable of such duties, then employers will need to invest extra funds and time in training the staff. Not every subject in universities is coherent with the outside market. There are, in fact, countless of concepts in modern science for which there are no real-life applications, yet this does not indicate to forgo such lessons. When the time comes, these courses will be incorporated into businesses, and people will start realizing their actual values in society. History, philosophy, and pure mathematics, to name a few, are proper examples of such fields. They all seem virtually useless in any career; nonetheless, universities need to keep teaching them to well-equip graduates for the future. That said, the role of the university is not only to facilitate the path toward existing job opportunities, but even more, it is to bear full responsibility for theforeseeable future where novel applications will be found for the previously impractical concepts.
