I was born in Iran, a Middle Eastern country with great natural resources, and I have lived here all my life. To be honest, violations of natural resources are not the subject I come across in the books and articles I read, but the exploitation of the natural resources by the community and governors especially in my country are the experiences I struggle with each and every day of life. The growth of people's negative impacts on environmental resources in my country due to the unavailability of necessary and relevant rules was one of the main motivations for me to choose this program. By learning more and more about natural resource violations, and establishing appropriate rules, we can prevent these kinds of illegal and unauthorized activities from happening. Accessing to Iran's natural resources by the government is getting out of control and there is a high demand to introduce reforms to environmental rules. As a result, I decided to pursue this program to learn more and conduct more research in this field to inform not only my country but all nations about environmental disasters that have been occurred due to our oil and gas exploitation and their inevitable consequences. Also, climate change is still a hot debate all around the world and all countries still lack a vital tool to defend the environment and combat climate change. I believe that it is our moral responsibility to protect land, air, water and soil for the next generation. To do so we need to set more environmentally friendly rules. I am keen on pursuing graduate work in this program at the University of Calgary due to the aforementioned reasons, but I first need to take advanced courses on natural resources law, energy, and environmental law to learn what substantive rules and procedural safeguards for the protection of the environment and natural resources are in place in developed countries. Upon completing these courses, I will be ready to write a paper to answer the question about as to how we can we strike a balance between meeting our secular daily/mundane needs and sustainable usage of the environmental resources.
