Critical Aspect of "Next Door" by Tobias Wolff "Next Door" by Tobias Wolff is a story about a stiff couple that are disturbed by the neighbors' quarreling. In the "next Door" the sterility of a couple's marriage is contrasted with erotic violence of the next door neighbors' marriage. The couple lie in a separate beds. It shows that their communication has reached to the lowest level. Based on this lack of communication and controlling Foucault discussed a theory. According to Foucault, the Panopticon offered a powerful and sophisticated internalized coercion, which was achieved through the constant observation of prisoners, each separated from each other allowing no interaction, no communication. This paper will be discuss this attitude in detail. Foucault argued the purpose of idea of Panopticon and said this happens in a the society that is always watched and controlled. This is internalized by people,. Therefore, they try to control themselves automatically. Based on the text, the wife wakes her husband because she is suffering suffered by neighbors' fight. The neighbors' marriage becomes controlcontrolled by a controller, but they did not gain any help from the controller. They try to block out the yelling by watching a movie on television. The primary couple seem kind and nurturing, particularly the husband who has planted flowers, cared for his sick wife, and carefully tries not to disturb her when she goes bed to sleep. But their marriage is characterized by separate beds within television in between them. They have a pet pat cat but no children. they do not complain to their neighbor even when he defecates on their flowers. The wife was once horrified to see the neighbors' passion in their kitchen after the man had violently beaten his dog. The woman is a horrible mother. This cruel, violent couple do have the energy of life. They reflect what is lacking in the primary couple who are too timid to defend their own home. Moreover, two aspects are in particular important. First, the system of social control and people in a disciplinary situation: in the text, not only does are the central conflict comes from the society but also from family itself. second, we have the power of the knowledge concept. In this view, power and knowledge comes from observing others. All modern mechanisms for controlling abnormal individuals derive from these. To sum up, The Panopticon induces a sense of permanent visibility that ensures the functioning of power. We understand how society and family are controlled ing, and how by watching TV Tv and other elements bring peace is brought on them for ownself.
