The high road toll is robbing our society of many people who could be leading useful and productive lives. How can society protect itself from these losses? The news about car accidents and the road toll is being broadcast increasingly. Besides its' financial detriment, society suffers this loss, as thoughwhereas these people could have been had productive lives. Only in Iran, it has been claimed that over 18,000 people are killed in car accidents per year. This unbelievable number shows that it is urgent for authorities to take effective actions, several of which are discussed below. Initially, learning to drive should be strictly controlled by local officials. To do so, some well-trained instructors should teach people not only technical skills of vehicle handling and traffic regulations, but the driving behavior which is crucial for traffic safety. Many of deadly car accidents are due to high risk traffic behaviors. Next, the roads should be monitored regularly. In order to achieve safer transportation, governments should spend more time and money on regular monitoring of roads and highways. Safety traffic signs must be installed in critical points of the roads and CCTV cameras should control the traffic. Last but not least, developing the public transportation can lead to decreases in the number of privately owned vehicles on roads and consequently, lessen road accidents and fatalities. This would also greatly affect the air pollution and it is more sustainable. In conclusion, authorities may conduct awareness programs/campaign on road safety and safe driving practices during driving teaching courses. Alongside, more money and time should be spent on roads upkeep and monitoring, to control their safety. And finally society members should be persuaded to use public transportation means, which are safer and more sustainable. Taking these actions, we could hope that the road toll decreases.
