Some people say that a country should produce food locally, while others believe that it is good to import food. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give your opinion and relevant examples. While many people strongly hold the idea that every country have to make the amount of food needed to feed its people, the opponents do not agree with this idea reasoning that many factors have to be considered to make an informed choice. When it comes to this notion, my vote does not go to it at any price. I opine that this is a strategic decision demanding a deeper consideration and broader view. It goes without saying that one of the primary needs of every creature after potable water is nutrition, and most probably that is why an overwhelming majority of the populace try to convince others that food self-sufficiency is of paramount importance. As far as I am concerned, scarcely can a country produce all types of food it requires. There are myriads of factors such as the weather, type of soil, and access to water and sun at play which just a few country may have them all. A blatant example is banana, which is considered one of the most highly nutritious fruits that only grows in specific regions in a narrow stream of tropical areas. I wholeheartedly wish that all countries were able to produce the amount of food they require, but this dream regrettably would not come true; not only because of ecological grounds, but also due to lack of financial justifications. Planting rice for example requires a good deal of water, and since water is not easily available in Africa, growing rice is not practically feasible there. Tired of heavy rains and humidity, people from in India and Sri Lanka for example can sell their rice to African countries, and instead pay for a sunny holiday in an African resort. To cut a long story short, I opine that since only limited areas of the world are suitable for agriculture or animal husbandry, it is not to the benefit of all nations to produce the entire food they need. I believe becoming food self-sufficient is somehow an idealistic viewpoint which can lead a country to a dramatic environmental disaster owing to the overuse of water for agricultural purposes.
