One of the most serious problems that cities now face is crime. What are the most effective measures to tackle crime in urban areas? In the present day, cities are strewn with a great deal ofnumerous difficulties, ranging from traffic congestion to committing violent felonies such as murder. There is no consensus as to what is the single most important issue cities are confronting; however, crime is one of the most challenging ones, and without a shadow of a doubt it should be high on the governments’ agenda. Innumerable means do exist with the aim of cutting crimes, though it is noteworthy that there is more to combating crimes than fining offenders or imprisoning felons; hence the importance of prospecting for more pragmatic approaches. Perpetrating offences, either misdemeanors such as traffic offence or felonies such as homicide, is inextricably linked to (having ?) a low socio-economic stratum; indeed, poverty breeds crime. Given that, alleviating poverty in society is integral to reducing crime statistics. Consider, for example, the head of a household grappling with fiscal issues and has having a slim hope to enlist government’s financial support, is he or she more liable to larceny or those who have a lot of money to burn? By the same token, education is another deterrent of fundamental efficacy. If city leaders aim to tackle escalating crimes and nip them in the bud, they ought to make every effort to ensure that the youth are being bestowed due education, lest they grow juvenile delinquents. Tutoring young charges can pave the way for inculcating the respect for people’s rights in their minds, so as not to violate those rights by engaging in crimes such as burglary- a violation of property rights- or even homicide- a violation of the right to life. Last but not least, rewarding law-abiding citizens might be a more decent practice than fining lawbreakers in that possessing a genuine incentive, such as a tax incentive or a reduction in one’s car insurance payment, can act as a stronger crime deterrent than a fear of penalties. The main conclusion to be drawn is that in this writer’s view among various measures that can be taken, education and overcoming poverty is are of the essence to prevent crime. 348 words
