W05: In many cities today, most people live in large apartment blocks. Does this kind of accommodation have more advantages or disadvantages? Over the last half century, a large number of people have chosen to live in apartments. Apartments not only offer people affordable accommodation in urban areas, but also assist governments in better managing of the cities’ land. Nevertheless, this type of houses has been putting some kinds of constraints on their residents which eclipse its benefits. This essay will discuss both sides of this issue. One of the greatest advantages of living in an apartment is that it requires a small area of land and provides a lot of flats. As a result, they are cheaper and more affordable than single-family detached homes. Besides, cost of maintenance for an apartment would be shared with residents and this will contribute to the family economy. It should be mentioned that unlike detached homes, apartments are safer to leave alone and there is always at least one of … neighbors to protect them from robbery. However, they are not always the best place to live. This is partly because they are usually noisy and crowded places. Inhabitants are generally with different cultural backgrounds, which ends in a lot of conflicts between them, in contrast to detached homes, which there are more private places and almost no one to argue with! Furthermore, risk of fire in apartments is undeniably high since fire in a flat can fully destroy an apartment. In conclusion, although many people prefer to live in detached houses, the ever-increasing price of lands in cities propels them into living in apartments and therefore, a set of rules and regulations of apartment accommodation should be made to improve the quality of life.
