Some people say history is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that, in today’s world, subjects like science and technology are more important than history. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. There is an old saying that goes “history repeats itself,” it means without the knowledge of the past decisions and their outcomes, we will end up with the same destiny as our ancestors. My firm conviction is that the history in the school curriculum is as significant a subject as is science. This is quite evident that the students’ horizons would be expanded through the acquisition of history lessons. In fact, examining the past provides a realistic insight toward the present. Racism, for instance, has beenwas practiced in Germany, and eventually, it had waged the world war. With the benefit of hindsight, nowadays, a racist conviction would be strictly ignored. Besides, history could establish a sense of identity in students, and subsequently, it is impossible to ignore history as it defines who we actually are. However, some would claim that in this century, the technology and the science subjects are more important than the history; therefore students would benefit more not only in their career but also in their personal life. At first glance, it would seem like a rational statement, but I firmly believe that putting away the history from the school curriculum would lead to a catastrophe in the long run. Iran, for instance, as a semi-developed country, was experiencing a high rate of economic growth and also considerable progress in modern technologies before the Islamic revolution. Although Iranians had experienced the dire consequences of a religious regime, they regrettably repeated the same mistake after almost a century. Herein lies the importance of the acquisition of history and learning from our ancestor’s experience. I could reason that any nation who is in pursuit of prosperity needs to understand the past before solving the present difficulties. the students whoare going to be the decision-makers of the country should take advantage of history’s invaluable life lessons along with learning science and technology.
